Another four days had passed and there was still no answer from Clark. Which wasn’t so surprising, even if Holly wished he would just let her know what she should be planning for the new year.

She was used to him keeping quiet until he had something to say. So while Clark’s only reply was to keep working on Hamlet while he worked on her January trip, Holly continued to gather more information about life in Hamlet.

When she wasn’t at the rec center with Xavier, she was driving around the town, taking photos, interviewing some of the local shop owners who didn’t really know they were being interviewed, doing her best to dig deep into the tight-knit community—including their love of Christmas. Then, when she had the chance, she sent snippets to her agent, keeping him in the loop about her latest trip.

She wasn’t so surprised, however, when her emails went largely unanswered. She knew she wasn’t Clark’s only client, and when it came to him, no news was good news. If he had a problem with the first draft of the blog post she was working on, he’d be sure to let her know. Since he couldn’t reach her by phone while she was in Hamlet, email was the best way to communicate.

All Holly had to do was drive out of Hamlet and park her car along the shoulder of the highway. No wi-fi, of course, but she was able to use her data to access the internet. Just enough to check her email before she headed back to the mountainside of town—or, more often these days, to the rec center.

Her computer was functional, even if she couldn’t go online when she was between Hamlet’s two natural borders. She could edit her photos, write up her blog posts, do everything except access the internet. If she wanted to log on with her laptop, she had to go a few miles out of town to the nearest Starbucks.

On Sunday, she decided to take the ride over while most of the Hamlet locals went to the service at the Hamlet Church. Gloria had explained to her that, like Christmas, it wasn’t so much about one particular religion as a way to bring the community together. At the church, you could find a crucifix, the Torah, a Buddha statue… so long as you had faith of any kind, you were welcome there.

Holly had her own relationship with religion. And while Willie had asked if she’d be at the church on Sunday the last time they met at the gym on Friday, she admitted that she already had plans. The older woman looked intrigued but didn’t say anything about it, and Holly didn’t know if she should be surprised or relieved. In the few days that they had worked together, she learned that Willie Parker was one of Hamlet’s most well-known—and well-liked—gossips.

As soon as Holly arrived at the Starbucks, she pulled into a spot and killed her engine. Her shoulder bag was on the passenger seat, her laptop tucked beside it.
